TO LEND OR NOT TO LEND...

As an avid reader, I have tons of books, mostly unread as I can only keep my favorites.  My friends know this so they sometimes ask to borrow them.  I always agree, sometimes begrudgingly.  This last time I lent a whole series of YA books (6) including one title that was brand new.  When they were returned, they looked like they had been kept in the trunk of a car or in a really damp place.  The pages were warped and there were mold spots all over the sides of the pages. Now, I know, they are only books, but I was devastated and angry.  I think this library is officially closed!!  I'm gonna have to learn to JUST SAY NO!

So has anyone found themselves in a similiar situation?  Do you typically lend out your books?

I totally hear the feeling, I don't lend my books anymore 'cause I take great care of them and don't want them to come back damaged.

I lent a series out to someone once & they ended up throwing the books away!!! :( Now I only led out books that I don't care if I get back or not.

I do not lend out my books. Once in a while I go through my books and give some away. But I never let anyone borrow them. they are like my little babies. lol
Also, with people who just read once in a while and don't have a lot of books of their own they tend to just throw them around, dog ear them, and whatever else. I take really good care of my books so I want them to stay that way.
Sorry this happened to you!

wow, that sucks! I lend books to people and so far have been lucky they were still in good condition when I got them back. Sorry you had such a bad loaner.

BTW I like the new lighter content font :)

JT is right, I did get them back and luckily, they are still readable. I am glad to learn I am not the only one who is obsessed with my favorites. Thanks for the support everyone.

For the books I really care about, I buy a second copy, so I have one to lend. I don't lend out anything irreplaceable.

Although I really like being surrounded by books, and generally keep them if I liked them at all, I also am happy knowing someone else is reading them.

No lending out books here. I've been burned too many times. People still don't understand how much I treasure my books and I can't deal with the carelessness anymore. I thought I was the only one. :)

I'm a 7th grade english teacher, so most of my YA reads go out on my shelves for them. I had to let go of concerns doing that. BUT I do cry a little inside when a brand new book comes back all banged up - or worse - a great book never comes back at all.

I do keep some special books off my shelves or I buy a second copy.

I total get the not wanting to lend them tho.

I lend books, but only to certain people. One of my friends is as much of a bibliophile as I am, and we regularly swap books with each other. I'll lend some books to my boyfriend, but there's one he wants to read that I said 'no' to, because it's my favourite book, a lovely texture, etc, and I just don't want to risk it getting damaged in any way.

I share my enthusiasm but not my books. I also collect and so few folks appreciate the proper care of a book.
