Author Interview and Giveaway: Chloe Neill

I am excited to present you with my first author interview: the talented Chloe Neill.  Chloe is the author of the Chicagoland Vampire series. Friday Night Bites, book two in the series, was just released October 6, 2009.   Chloe, I am thrilled and honored to have you as my first guest.

1. Could you start by telling us a bit about your Chicagoland Vampire series?

CN: Absolutely. The Chicagoland Vampires series tells the story of Merit, a grad-student-turned-vampire who has to make the sometimes awkward transition from Smart Girl to Vampire Warrior. Vampires have recently announced their existence to the world, so Merit has to find her place within a world of very strategic vampires, even as she discovers that her family and friends aren't immune to the supernatural currents.

2. On your website, you have named the next two books in the series, Twice Bitten (July2010) and Hard Bitten (TBA). How many books do you anticipate for this series?
CN: I have ideas for about eight books, and there are currently four under contract (Some Girls Bite, Friday Night Bites, Twice Bitten, Hard bitten).

3. If you could describe your heroine, Merit, in 5 words, which would you choose?
CN: Smart, sarcastic, lovely, witty, hopeful.

4. Lately, readers are being exposed to stacks of vampire books. What makes your stories stand out from the rest?
CN: I like to think that I've put a new spin on the traditional vampire mythos. In the CV series, vampires lived as assimilated humans for centuries. As a result, they had their own rules, regulations and traditions. I try to explore that world within CV as vampires figure out how to live now that they're out of the closet.

5. On a guest post at the Knight Agency, I read that you are a visual person. How does this effect your world building and story planning?
CN: I like to collect images from the Internet from design and news sites that inspire me and the worlds I build, whether in fashion, art or architecture. These kind of references can be really helpful when I'm stuck or when I'm trying to figure out how a world should "feel."

6. Your Young Adult debut, Firespell (Dark Elite, book 1), comes out in January 2010. Was it hard to make the transition to YA novels?
CN: It was definitely a transition, although for very practical reasons. YA heroines are under age, may not be able to drive, can't vote, may have to abide by curfews, and are supposed to be in school all day. It's definitely a challenge to make a story interesting within all of those rules.

7. Are you currently working on any other projects you would like to share with us?
CN: I've just finished writing TWICE BITTEN, Chicagoland Vampires book three, and I'm now starting the second book in the DARK ELITE series. I have a couple of additional urban fantasy series ideas, but no time to work on them! :)

8. Lastly, what is your favorite way to relax after a hard day of writing? Any guilty pleasures?
CN: I actually have a day job, so writing is the thing I do at the end of the day to "relax." Unless I'm on a deadline, in which case, no relaxing. :)

CN: Thanks for having me today!

Great interview, Elnice!

My question for Chloe: It seems like your first and second books came out quite close together. Did you have the second one ready when you got the first one published, or do you just manage to write super fast?

I can't wait to read these books, but I still haven't found the first one on the shelves!

And I blogged about the contest on the Book Bundle, here:

I just won a copy of Some Girls Bite 9very excited about that). So I am curious, Chloe:
How similar are you and Merit? How much Chloe is there in Merit, and v.v.?

Shadowofwonder47 said...

One of the reasons I’ve always liked YA books or books featuring teenagers better than Adult books because it’s interesting and sometimes amusing to see how the author goes about working supernatural adventures around the daily routine and rules of a teenager.

My question for Chloe is: Which do you like writing better YA or Adult? And which do you like reading more? And why?
