REVIEW: UNDEAD AND UNWORTHY by MARYJANICE DAVIDSON

Summary from the official site of Mary Janice Davison.  Nobody reigns over the undead with more savvy than  heroine Betsy Taylor, back to rule the nights as Vampire Queen––and survive the days as a new suburban bride. But it’s not all marital bliss. Betsy’s husband, Sinclair, has been perusing The Book of the Dead, Betsy’s being hounded by a ghost who’s even more insufferable in death than in life, and a pack of formerly feral vampires has decided to pay an unwelcome visit…

My thoughts...The library finally pulled through on this one.  This is one I would have just bought, but it wasn't released in paperback right away.  For those of you who haven't read any MJD yet, this is book 7 in the UNDEAD series.  I am waiting on book 8, Undead and Unwelcome.  It should come from the library this week.

So, about the book...I was a bit panicked when I read the Note To Reader that said "You probably noticed a change in the cover design (if your reading the American version, that is) among other things, and that is indicative of the new direction I'm taking the series in.".  I like the Queen Betsy series, they are light, funny, easy reads.  So when she mentioned a "new direction", I was a little worried.   That being said, I did not notice a change.  Betsy still finds herself in the worst situations.  This book, like the others, was a quick read with only 285 pages. They are not deep, life changing stories and yes, they could probably roll two books into one, but they are meant to be fun, easy reads.  I would rate them a 4/5.

For more information on MaryJanice Davidson and her books, visit her website

If you liked this book, you may also like:

2. Dead End Dating:A Novel of Vampire Love (book 1) by Kimberly Raye
3. I'm the Vampire, That's Why (Broken Heart Oklahoma, book 1) by, Michelle Bardsley

**Never read any MaryJanice Davidson books before?  I am giving away the FIRST THREE BOOKS in the series.  Watch for the contest announcement!

IN MY MAILBOX (2)...

In my mailbox is hosted weekly by The Story Siren.  This was a really slow week for my mailbox.  I didn't even have much of a chance to go book shopping.  I did do some cleaning out though.  I eliminated some older titles that I just don't think I'll read.  Maybe this week I should be posting what's NOT in my mailbox.

So here they are:
1. Night World Volume 3 by, LJ Smith (used book store)

2. The Darkest Whisper by, Gena Showalter ( used book store)

That's all.  Did someone say something about a mail strike?

REVIEW: Thirst by Christopher Pike

Summary from Amazon.com- As to blood -- ah, blood, the whole subject fascinates me. I do like that as well, warm and dripping, when I am thirsty. And I am often thirsty....
Alisa has been in control of her urges for the five thousand years she has been a vampire. She feeds but does not kill, and she lives her life on the fringe to maintain her secret. But when her creator returns to hunt her, she must break her own rules in order to survive.
Her quest leads her to Ray. He is the only person who can help her; he also has every reason to fear her. Alisa must get closer to him to ensure her immortality. But as she begins to fall in love with Ray, suddenly there is more at stake than her own life....

My thoughts...This book is a re-binding of a series which originally came out in 1991 titled "The Last Vampire Series".  Sita, the heroine of this story, is a 5000 year old vampire living in modern times.  Her character was strong as she demonstrated traits that a being that old would have such as lonliness, loss and longing for true love.  The story line is ok, but it flashes back frequently and I found myself daydreaming or having to reread due to confusion.   Some of the writing felt choppy, for me, it made it difficult to read.  I didn't finish it.  That's not to say I won't, some day, but right now it didn't hold my attention long enough.  If I had to rate it, I would say 3/5.

REVIEW: Would-Be-Witch by Kimberly Frost

Summary from the Official Website of Kimberly Frost.   In the small town of Duvall, Texas, the only thing more troublesome than gossip—is magic.

The family magic seems to have skipped Tammy Jo Trask. All she gets in the way of the supernatural are a few untimely visits from the long dead, smart-mouthed family ghost, Edie. But when her locket, an heirloom that happens to hold Edie’s soul, is stolen in the midst of a town-wide crime spree, it’s time for Tammy to find her inner witch.
After a few experiences in dysfunctional magic, Tammy turns to the only one who can help; the very rich and highly magical, Bryn Lyons. He might have all the answers—and a 007-savoir faire to boot—but the locket isn’t the only legacy passed down in Tammy’s family. She also inherited a warning…to stay away from anyone named Lyons.

Click here to read an excerpt from chapter one.

My thoughts...The easiest way for me to descibe this book is a cross between the Stephanie Plum Series (Janet Evanovich) and Rachel Morgan from the Hollows Series (Kim Harrison).  Since these are two of my favorites, I LOVED this book!  Tammy Jo is an adorable, witty, seemingly normal heroine, who comes into her magic later than most in her absentee family.  I immediately fell for her chivalrous ex-husband, even though the bad boy wizard left a vivid impression.

Although Would-Be-Witch did not end with a cliffhanger, there are some unanswered questions that should be addressed in the next installments.  The second book in the series, Barely Bewitched, hit the shelves on September 1.  According to her website,  there will be at least three books in the series.  I have already ordered the second one.   If you enjoy witch stories infused with romance, humor and charm, then I definitely recommend this book to you.

TICK, TOCK, BLOG

I am fairly new to the world of blogging.  Lately, I have been spending tons of time on my blog and reading other blogs.  It is amazing how time consuming it can be.  I  really enjoy reading all the book blogs, but I need to manage my time.  I usually read 3 books a week (average), last week, I read one!

How much time do you spend on blogging or reading book blogs per week?

It's a bird, It's a plane, It's SciFiGuy!!

I am new to this world of blogging, but I have been quick in choosing my favorites.  I read these so frequently, that in my eyes, these bloggers are like celebrities.  So the other day when I noticed I had a comment on MY blog from none other than the SciFiGuy, well let's just say that I was REALLY excited.

In case you have never visited his site, read on.  Doug, aka SciFiGuy provides comprehensive posts that share a wide variety of information.  He includes book reviews, interviews, contests, cover art and news that would put CNN to shame.  He is well versed, smart and he loves to read.  Can you imagine the size of his brain.  A book nerd like me finds this irresistible.

So in conclusion, Cindy at Princess Bookie has her boyfriend of the week, but SciFiGuy is my cyber sweetie! SciFiGuy can visit my blog anyday!

Have you ever been starstruck by another blogger visiting your site?

TO LEND OR NOT TO LEND...

As an avid reader, I have tons of books, mostly unread as I can only keep my favorites.  My friends know this so they sometimes ask to borrow them.  I always agree, sometimes begrudgingly.  This last time I lent a whole series of YA books (6) including one title that was brand new.  When they were returned, they looked like they had been kept in the trunk of a car or in a really damp place.  The pages were warped and there were mold spots all over the sides of the pages. Now, I know, they are only books, but I was devastated and angry.  I think this library is officially closed!!  I'm gonna have to learn to JUST SAY NO!

So has anyone found themselves in a similiar situation?  Do you typically lend out your books?

REVIEW: Intertwined by Gena Showalter

Summary from Gena Showalter's website...
There’s something about the new guy at Crossroads High…
Most sixteen-year-olds have friends. Aden Stone has four human souls living inside him:
One can time-travel.
One can raise the dead.
One can tell the future.
And one can possess another human.

With no other family and a life spent in and out of institutions, Aden and the souls have become friends. But now, they’re causing him all kinds of trouble.
Like, he’ll blink and suddenly he’s a younger Aden, reliving the past. One wrong move, and he’ll change the future. Or, he’ll walk past a total stranger and know how and when she’s going to die.
He’s so over it. All he wants is peace.

And then he meets a girl who quiets the voices. Well, for as long as he’s with her. Why? Mary Ann Gray is his total opposite. He’s a loner; she has friends. He doesn’t care what anyone thinks; she tries to make everyone happy. And while he attracts the paranormal, she repels it. For her sake, he should stay away. But it’s too late. . .
Somehow, they share an inexplicable bond of friendship. A bond about to be tested by a werewolf shape-shifter who wants Mary Ann for his own and a vampire princess Aden can’t resist. Two romances, both forbidden. . . doomed. Still, the four will enter a dark underworld of intrigue and danger. . . but not everyone will come out alive. . .

My thoughts...This is the first book by Gena Showalter that I have read and I was surprized to see that it is her fourth YA release.  This book surprized me with the amount of supernatural beings that live in Aden's world.  There were quite a few personalities voicing opinions and at times I found myself rereading to avoid confusion.  Although the story didn't immediately grab me, as it progressed it drew me in and kept me guessing until the end.  Although this isn't my favorite YA read to date, I am glad I read it and I will be eagerly awaiting the next 3 installments starting with Unraveled (September 2010).

If you haven't already, enter Gena's  Intertwined Contest.  The grand prize is $10,000.
Also for more information on any of Gena's books, visit her website.

REVIEW: Real Vampires Have Curves by Gerry Bartlett

What—did you think all vamps were pale, thin and brooding?

Don’t I wish.

Me, I just happened to be bloating when a sexy Scotsman sank his teeth into me, so here I am, eternally “full-figured.” On the plus side, Glory St. Clair can rock a corset like nobody’s business. Oh, and as for Angus Jeremiah Campbell III, aka Jeremy Blade? We’ve been on and off again for centuries, currently off. After a couple hundred years we sure know how to press each other’s hot buttons—in good ways and bad. (This is an exerpt from Jerry Bartlett's webiste)

Jerry Bartlett breaks many stereotypes with her heroine Glory St. Clair.  Rather than being model thin, she is voluptuous in all the right places.  Glory is also strong willed, independent and adored by several charming vampires.  From her talking dog to the kilt wearing Scottsman, Jerry Bartlett creates a creative vampire world.

I enjoyed the witty characters and the romantic connection the main characters share.  However, it took me a while to get into the story.  This is book 1 of 5 (Real Vampires Hate Their Thighs comes out in 2010) and there was a lot of world building done.  I did grow fond of the characters and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.  Real Vampires Have Curves is a fun, humorous read and I recommend it to any vampire fan.  Please visit her website for more information on this series.

ON MY WISH LIST- WORLD WAR Z BY MAX BROOKS

This book by author Max Brooks,  who also wrote The Zombie Survival Guide in 2003, has been on my wish list for some time.  Brooks writes of the world's desparate attempt to battle the zombie threat.  The story uses "first-person accounts" of peoples struggles and battles all around the world.

I have heard several brilliant review of this book and I can't wait to read it.  Use the link below to visit Max Brooks' site and take the quiz.  Would you survive a zombie attack?
My chances for survival would have only been 34%, what is yours?
