Interview and Giveaway: Mari Mancusi

I am pleased to welcome the talented Mari Macusi.  Mari is the author of the Blood Coven series as well as several other titles for young adults.

1. Please tell us about your Blood Coven series.
MM: The Blood Coven series follows the adventures of two identical twin girls, Sunshine and Rayne. In the beginning of Book #1, Boys that Bite, Rayne wants to be a vampire very badly. She's networked, been on waiting lists, taken a certification course--the works. But on the night when her dream is about to come true, the vampire who is supposed to bite her, accidentally bites her twin sister instead. Now Sunny, who up until now had no idea vampires even existed, has one week to figure out a way to reverse the transformation or she will become a vampire forever.

2. Bad Blood, book 4 in the series, came out January 5th, what is this book about?
MM: Without giving away too much of the previous books, Bad Blood has Sunny and Rayne heading to Las Vegas where vampire masters from around the world are gathering for a convention. There, Sunny's boyfriend, master of the Blood Coven, is supposed to join together as Blood Mates with another girl. Since a Blood Mate is basically the same as a soul mate for vampires, Sunny is so not pleased. Especially when she realizes the Blood Mate in question, Jane Johnson, might actually be evil and out for the Blood Coven's destruction. It's up to her and her sister to stop her before it's too late.

3. These books have been "revamped" with new covers. Did you get any creative input on the new covers? Has anything else changed?
MM: I didn't have a ton of imput on the new covers, but they did ask me what kinds of covers I liked. I mentioned Houes of Night and Vampire Academy and I think the final covers do have that same kind of darker field of those series. I think they're beautiful -- especially Bad Blood and Stake That - and couldn't have asked for anything better!

Inside the books I was able to update some of the pop culture references and also re-insert Girls that Growl's original cliffhanger ending, which had been taken out of the first verion in case we couldn't do a fourth book.

4. Mari, I have discovered that you wear many hats; writer, TV producer, and Emmy winner to name a few. Are you a vampire? I mean only those who need NO sleep could keep that type of schedule!
MM: Ha! I wish! Unfortunately I have to do it all and get a good night's sleep. :) I wake up in the morning to write - two hours before I need to get ready for work. It's not always fun, but having the books take shape makes it all worthwhile. I also write during my lunch hour at work. If you want something badly enough, you make time for it. Luckily I love both my jobs so I'm happy to make it all work!

5. Seriously, do you you believe in paranormal beings such as ghosts, witches, werewolves or vampires?
MM: As Agent Mulder in X Files always says, "I want to believe." There's a whole big world out there--I imagine reality is bigger than we can even imagine!

6. Was their any particular musical artists that inspired you while writing Bad Blood?
MM: As my heroine Rayne is, I'm a goth girl at heart. I listen to a lot of VNV Nation, Bauhaus, Covenant, Sisters of Mercy, David Bowie, Joy Division, New Order, Depeche Mode, Cure, etc. etc. But as I'm writing I prefer music without words to distract me - so I usually gear up an electronica mix.

7. What's next? Are you currently working on any projects you would like to share with us?
MM: I'm working on Book #5 of the series, which I've been tentatively calling NIGHT SCHOOL. It's coming out summer 2010 in Germany. Not sure of a US release date yet. I've also just finished a time travel called THE CAMELOT CODE for my other publiser Dutton. I'm particularly proud of this project and can't wait to share it with readers--most likely in summer 2011.

8. Lastly, what is one thing your readers would be shocked to learn about you?
MM: I love horror movies. The cheesier the better. In fact, my finace and I reguarly host "cheesy horror movie nights" at our apartment. I have a particular fondness for the Friday the 13th series. It's so bad it's good! :) I also love videogames and manga and cosplay. I might actually be a 15 year old at heart! But that's okay - 'cause I have a lot of fun!!

Thank you for taking the time to visit with us and congratulations on your success.

MM: Thank you!!!

Okay, so I think she's lying, and you're right - she's totally a vampire. How could ANYONE motivate themselves to get up *2 HOURS* before work to write?!? Craziness! I've really got to read one of her books!

Mari -- playing favourites, which i know is hard... which of the books you've written would you say is your favourite and why?
Also, if you had to choose to write in a different book "genre", which genre would you pick?

Thanks for the inside scoop on BC! I am really hoping to get my hands on some of these in the near future so I can catch up on what I've missed out. P.S. Cheesy horror movies are the best!

This is a really cool interview. I have the old cover of Boys That Bite but have yet to read it. It's always good to know a little bit more about the author.

Marianne Mancusi said...

For Ruby:

which of the books you've written would you say is your favourite and why?

That's like picking a favorite child! haha. Hm. I have a special sentimental attachment to my very first book, A Connecticut Fashionista in King Arthur's Court, which was an adult time travel romance. I guess you just never forget your first! As for the Blood Coven series, I really like Stake That because I wrote it in blog format and it was fun to make up the reader comments to my heroine's blog. But in the end, I think my best and favorite book is The Camelot Code, which won't be released for a while!

Also, if you had to choose to write in a different book "genre", which genre would you pick?

I've already done contemporary, time travel, futuristic, cyber-punk, urban fantasy...So that's tough. Maybe a gothic. I'd probably be terrible at it, but it'd definitely be a learning experience to write! :)

I completely agree with the the whole "I want to believe" thing when it comes to mythical creatures. I'm with you 100 percent... except for those unlucky people who become dinner for such creatures :P

I confess to not having read your books, Mari. I intend to change that right away.

Marianne Mancusi said...

You guys are awesome! Thanks for all the love!! Donna - I really need to figure out how to add more Lost Boys to future books, lol. If for no reason than to make you laugh!

Marilu I asked my fiance if we had twins someday if he'd let me name them Sunny and Rayne. He sadly didn't think it was the best idea ever. (Even though it totally is!)

Jackie - thanks for mentioning the Amazon thing. If any of you want personally signed Blood Coven books you can go to my amazon store at http://www.amazon.com/shops/A2RJOBCM9VEC99 and purchase them there. After getting receipt of purchase, I will then send you an email asking who you would like the book made out to.

Since I have a day job that won't let me tour the country, I figure this way I can still get autographed books to those who want them! :)

Anyway, thanks again everyone and good luck with the giveaway!!

Hiya Mari! Awesome interview!!! I haven’t read your books before, but I’ve heard TONS of good things about them! They really sound like spectacular books that I would immensely enjoy! I also like that your vampire “layout” (the way vampires act, are made, feed, etc.) seems unique! While there’s nothing wrong with following vampire themes of the past its always ten times more fun when there’s some uniqueness mixed in!

Nicole said...

Mari, I was fortunate enough to sit in on several of your panels at Dragoncon last year. I went out and ordered the first in the series and look forward to reading it soon.

(Oh, and yes, VNV are amazing. I also recommend Mesh and Assemblage 23)
