1. Please tell us about your Blood Coven series.
MM: The Blood Coven series follows the adventures of two identical twin girls, Sunshine and Rayne. In the beginning of Book #1, Boys that Bite, Rayne wants to be a vampire very badly. She's networked, been on waiting lists, taken a certification course--the works. But on the night when her dream is about to come true, the vampire who is supposed to bite her, accidentally bites her twin sister instead. Now Sunny, who up until now had no idea vampires even existed, has one week to figure out a way to reverse the transformation or she will become a vampire forever.
2. Bad Blood, book 4 in the series, came out January 5th, what is this book about?
MM: Without giving away too much of the previous books, Bad Blood has Sunny and Rayne heading to Las Vegas where vampire masters from around the world are gathering for a convention. There, Sunny's boyfriend, master of the Blood Coven, is supposed to join together as Blood Mates with another girl. Since a Blood Mate is basically the same as a soul mate for vampires, Sunny is so not pleased. Especially when she realizes the Blood Mate in question, Jane Johnson, might actually be evil and out for the Blood Coven's destruction. It's up to her and her sister to stop her before it's too late.
3. These books have been "revamped" with new covers. Did you get any creative input on the new covers? Has anything else changed?
MM: I didn't have a ton of imput on the new covers, but they did ask me what kinds of covers I liked. I mentioned Houes of Night and Vampire Academy and I think the final covers do have that same kind of darker field of those series. I think they're beautiful -- especially Bad Blood and Stake That - and couldn't have asked for anything better!
Inside the books I was able to update some of the pop culture references and also re-insert Girls that Growl's original cliffhanger ending, which had been taken out of the first verion in case we couldn't do a fourth book.
4. Mari, I have discovered that you wear many hats; writer, TV producer, and Emmy winner to name a few. Are you a vampire? I mean only those who need NO sleep could keep that type of schedule!
MM: Ha! I wish! Unfortunately I have to do it all and get a good night's sleep. :) I wake up in the morning to write - two hours before I need to get ready for work. It's not always fun, but having the books take shape makes it all worthwhile. I also write during my lunch hour at work. If you want something badly enough, you make time for it. Luckily I love both my jobs so I'm happy to make it all work!
5. Seriously, do you you believe in paranormal beings such as ghosts, witches, werewolves or vampires?
MM: As Agent Mulder in X Files always says, "I want to believe." There's a whole big world out there--I imagine reality is bigger than we can even imagine!
MM: As my heroine Rayne is, I'm a goth girl at heart. I listen to a lot of VNV Nation, Bauhaus, Covenant, Sisters of Mercy, David Bowie, Joy Division, New Order, Depeche Mode, Cure, etc. etc. But as I'm writing I prefer music without words to distract me - so I usually gear up an electronica mix.
7. What's next? Are you currently working on any projects you would like to share with us?
MM: I'm working on Book #5 of the series, which I've been tentatively calling NIGHT SCHOOL. It's coming out summer 2010 in Germany. Not sure of a US release date yet. I've also just finished a time travel called THE CAMELOT CODE for my other publiser Dutton. I'm particularly proud of this project and can't wait to share it with readers--most likely in summer 2011.
8. Lastly, what is one thing your readers would be shocked to learn about you?
MM: I love horror movies. The cheesier the better. In fact, my finace and I reguarly host "cheesy horror movie nights" at our apartment. I have a particular fondness for the Friday the 13th series. It's so bad it's good! :) I also love videogames and manga and cosplay. I might actually be a 15 year old at heart! But that's okay - 'cause I have a lot of fun!!
Thank you for taking the time to visit with us and congratulations on your success.
MM: Thank you!!!
