Review: Bite Me (Love Story #3) by Christopher Moore

Abigail Von Normal, nonperky, mysterious teen queen of the San Francisco night scene and backup mistress of Tommy, the unintentional Vampire is back to lead you through the 3rd book in the San Francisco Vampire trilogy. Learn what happens to Tommy, Jody, the Vampire Flood, Chet the Enormous Cat, The Smurfette, the Animals, and all your other favorites!

The city of San Francisco is being stalked by a huge shaved vampyre cat named Chet, and only I, Abby Normal, emergency backup mistress of the Greater Bay Area night, and my manga-haired love monkey, Foo Dog, stand between the ravenous monster and a bloody massacre of the general public.

Whoa. And this is a love story? Yup. 'Cept there's no whining. See, while some lovers were born to run, Jody and Tommy were born to bite. Well, reborn, that is, now that they're vampires. Good thing theirs is an undying love, since their Goth Girl Friday, Abby Normal, imprisoned them in a bronze statue.

Abby wants to be a bloodsucking fiend, too, but right now she's really busy with other stuff, like breaking in a pair of red vinyl thigh-high Skankenstein® platform boots and wrangling her Ph.D.-candidate boyfriend, Steve (the love monkey). And then there's that vampire cat Chet, who's getting bigger and smarter—and thirstier—by the minute. Abby thought she and Steve could handle the kitty cat on their own, mais non . . .

Before you can say "OMG! WTF?" Tommy and Jody are sprung from captivity, and join forces with Abby, Steve, the frozen-turkey-bowling Safeway crew, the Emperor of San Francisco and his trusty dogs Lazarus and Bummer, Abby's gay Goth friend Jared, and SF's finest Cavuto and Rivera to hunt big cat and save the city. And that's when the fun really begins.

Follow this link to read the first two chapters of Bite Me.

My thoughts...It is been a while since I visited the world of Christopher Moore.  It is a place of quick wit, snarky behavior, and snappy characters.  This book starts off with Abby and her high-tech boyfriend living in the loft.  Things get a bit hairy when Chet, the vampire cat, starts making more vampire animals.  The town of San Francisco seems to be under attack.  Readers will get to see their favorites, including Jody, Tommy, and the Animals.  We also get to meet Okata, who turned out to be one of the deepest characters in the book.

The plot of the story moved at a slow pace for me, it was too easy to put down.  The Vampire animals was funny at first, but quickly seemed to consume most of the book.  The POV jumped around a lot which left me a bit dizzy.  I had a very hard time reading Abby's chapters.  She is a young character, with obvious identity issues, but her vocabulary went from funny to irritating withing a few chapters.

Overall, I am glad I read this final book in the trilogy.  It did provide some much needed and long-awaited closure.  If you plan on reading Bite Me, read the other two in the series first and read them together if you can.  The last book would be most enjoyable if you were already in the rhythm of Moore's writing.  The series is sure to provide some good laughs and a fresh look at the Vampire scene.

For more information of Christopher Moore and his books, visit him at his website.  For fun, check out his cover gallery.  This shows the international cover for all of his books.

How do you come back from the point of no return?

Seth McCoy was the last person to see his best friend Isaac alive, and the first to find him dead. It was just another night, just another party, just another time where Isaac drank too much and passed out on the lawn. Only this time, Isaac didn’t wake up.

Convinced that his own actions led to his friend’s death, Seth is torn between turning his life around . . . or losing himself completely.

Then he meets Rosetta: so beautiful and so different from everything and everyone he’s ever known. But Rosetta has secrets of her own, and Seth will soon realize he isn’t the only one who needs saving . . .

YA review: The Forbidden Sea

When, one stormy night, a mermaid comes to take Adrianne Keynnman's sister, Cecily, down into the depths of te sea, Adrianne knows she must fight with every ounce of her strength to protect her little sister. On land, Adrianne toils away, trying to eke out a living for her mother, sister, and aunt, after a tragic accident stole her father. Now, life takes a strange and frightening turn as Adrianne's dreams are filled with the mermaid's singing . . .(summary from author's blog)

My thoughts...One of the biggest things I look for when reading a book is a strong heroine.  Adrianne, the young girl from The Forbidden Sea is just that.  She is very strong willed, smart, determined, and very devoted to her family.  I instantly felt sympathetic for this girl who lost her father in a tragic accident.  She finds herself living in poverty with her mother, sister, and an aunt that treats her very disdainfully.  She has an inner strength that helps her deal with some very difficult people and situations.  The other characters helped build the story, but they were not as memorable as Adrianne.

The plot of The Forbidden Sea moved at a steady pace.  The book takes place in an earlier time and the author did a good job of describing the lifestyle of the villagers.  I could imagine the fear from a time when legends seemed alive in memories and stories.  The book really got vivid toward the ending.  The story got very suspenseful and I was very unsure how it would end.

Overall, I really enjoyed the writing style and the originality of the book.  This is a safe title for younger readers and I would recommend it to fans of YA literature.

YA interview: Leah Cypess

I am excited today to share my interview with author Leah Cypess.  Her novel, Mistwood hits bookstores TODAY!

1. Please tell us about your debut novel Mistwood.
LC: Mistwood is a novel about an ancient shapeshifter trapped in the form of a human girl. When the story starts, the main character, Isabel, is alone in the Mistwood with no memory of how she got there. She is quickly whisked off to a dangerous castle, a place full of enemies and intrigues, where almost everybody is lying… and they all seem to know more about Isabel than she knows about herself.  (you can read the first three chapters by following this link)

2. A strong heroine makes a story worth reading. Please describe your heroine Isabel.
LC: She's complicated, because she's not human... she's immortal and powerful and is supposed to care about nothing but protecting the prince. But she's lost her memory, she's having trouble using most of her powers, and along with being trapped in human form, she finds herself dealing with strange human emotions that she's never felt before.

3. Will Mistwood be a stand-alone novel or do you have plans for a series?
LC: Mistwood is a stand-alone novel. There will be at least one companion book set in the same general world, and hopefully more! But each book will be meant to stand on its own.

4. For you, what is the hardest part of the writing process?
LC: Those times when I think I'm done with a certain scene, character, or plot twist... and then I realize there's a problem, and that problem can only be fixed by reworking the entire manuscript.

5. It sounds as though your characters live in a mystical, mysterious world. How do you keep track of your world building?
LC: I do as much research as I can -- the more I can base myself on real historical places or patterns, the easier it is to describe my world. (Though I do sometimes let my imagination have its way.) Occasionally I make lists of things I have to remember or keep consistent. Often I pull out parts of my manuscript, paste them in a new document, and read them all at once to make sure I haven't contradicted myself anywhere.

6. I know you enjoy a variety of musical artists. Were there any that inspired you while you were writing Mistwood?
LC: Not really; I usually don't listen to music when I write.

7. If you were a shapeshifter, which form would be your favorite?
 LC: A bird, definitely.

8. Lastly, what is your favorite way to unwind after a hard night of writing? Any guilty pleasures?
LC: For so long, writing _was_ my guilty pleasure -- I have a hard time realizing that it's my job now, and that sometimes I need a break. But when I am feeling stressed out, a bubble bath plus a book is a good combination. Especially if there are cookies afterward.

Thank you so much for taking the time to do an interview with me. Congrats on your book!

For more information about Leah, visit her website.  Mistwood can be purchased from popular booksellers such as Barnes and Noble or  Amazon

Cover Love? three-fer

Orbit launched three covers for a new series called THE LEGEND OF ELI MONPRESS.  Starting in October, there will be one release per month.  The books are The Spirit Thief, The Spirit Rebellion, and The Spirit Eater.  The article described the series as "having all the adventure of a classic epic fantasy combined with the wit and humor of The Princess Bride".  The main character is a wizard!  Check out each cover followed by a brief description from the Orbit website

Eli Monpress is talented. He’s charming. And he’s a thief.

But not just any thief. He’s the greatest thief of the age – and he’s also a wizard. And with the help of his partners – a swordsman with the most powerful magic sword in the world but no magical ability of his own, and a demonseed who can step through shadows and punch through walls – he’s going to put his plan into effect.

The first step is to increase the size of the bounty on his head, so he’ll need to steal some big things. But he’ll start small for now. He’ll just steal something that no one will miss – at least for a while.

Like a king.

Eli Monpress is brilliant. He’s incorrigible. And he’s a thief.

He’s also still at large, which drives Miranda Lyonette crazy. While she’s been kicked out of the Spirit Court, Eli’s had plenty of time to plan his next adventure. But now the tables have turned, because Miranda has a new job – and an opportunity to capture a certain thief,

Things are about to get exciting for Eli. He’s picked a winner for his newest heist. His target: the Duke of Gaol’s famous “thief-proof” citadel. Eli knows Gaol is a trap, but what’s life without challenges? Except the Duke is one of the wealthiest men in the world, a wizard who rules his duchy with an iron fist, and an obsessive perfectionist with only one hobby: Eli.

It seems that everyone is hunting for Eli Monpress.

Eli Monpress is clever. He’s magnetic. And he’s a thief.

With the pressure on after his success in Gaol, Eli Monpress, professional thief and degenerate, decides it’s time to lie low for a bit. Taking up residence in a tiny seaside village, Eli and his companions seize the chance for some fun and relaxation.

Nico, however, is finding it a bit hard. Plagued by a demon’s voice in her head and feeling powerless, she only sees herself as a burden. Everyone’s holiday comes to an untimely close, though, when Pele arrives to beg Eli’s help for finding her missing father.

But there are larger plans afoot than even Eli can see, and the real danger, and the solution, may lie with one of his own and her forgotten past.

If only Nico could remember whose side she’s on.

This sounds like a series to watch for.
So what do you think?  Are you in cover love?

SheWolf Challenge: All Things Werewolf

It is Werewolf weekend at vvb32reads, so here is something fun for you...

This is your one stop post for all things werewolf.   I have compiled a list sites to help you lead your life of lycanthropy.

Communicating with humans will be an issue, so you will need to work on your drawing skills.  Follow this link for a tutorial on how to draw yourself.  Once you complete your picture, you can personalize it with pink bows or a spikey collar.  Here's mine...
Not sure about the latest fashions?  WikiHow tells you How To Get That Werewolf Look.  This includes tips on dressing and behaving like a perfect wolf.  For example...
If wearing jewelery, it should depict a wolf or be simple and naturalistic. The most common form of wolf jewelry is some form of pendants and belt-buckles. However, silver jewelery tends to be discouraged. Try for something like a wooden charm, or a simple charm bracelet.

Lastly, in case you find yourself in a dangerous situation with another werewolf (or vampire for that matter), Fictionpress offers The Vampire and Werewolf Survival Guide.  This should help keep you safe in any situation.  Happy Howling!

Got INK? (18)

In honor of wwb32's Werewolf Weekend, I am having a special Werewolf edition of Got INK?  You can participate in the SheWolf challenge and post about all things furry.  Visit vvb32reads for more details.

Patricia Briggs is known for writing about wolves.  She makes them strong, magical, and very sexy.  Her covers are brilliant, displaying the heroine Mercy and her elaborate ink.  Silver Borne, the 5th book in the Mercy series, hit shelves in March.  Check out the ink...
All-new action in the #1 New York Times bestselling urban fantasy series When mechanic and shapeshifter Mercy Thompson attempts to return a powerful Fae book she'd previously borrowed in an act of desperation, she finds the bookstore locked up and closed down. It seems the book contains secret knowledge-and the Fae will do just about anything to keep it out of the wrong hands. And if that doesn't take enough of Mercy's attention, her friend Samuel is struggling with his wolf side-leaving Mercy to cover for him, lest his own father declare Sam's life forfeit. All in all, Mercy has had better days. And if she isn't careful, she might not have many more to live... (summary from Barnes and Noble)

SheWolf Challenge review: Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

Velvet at vvb32 is hosting a SheWolf Challenge.  Visit her blog for more details and for some exciting posts about our furry friends.   I recently finished Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater, here is my review...

For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human... until the cold makes him shift back again.

Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human—or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever. (summary from author's site)

Listen to chapters 1 and 2 read by Maggie by following this link.

My thoughts...I have not read many werewolf tales, but this is one of the best.  One of my favorite things about Shiver is its originality.  Maggie Stiefvater steps away from the usual traits of these shifting creatures and creates her own rules.  These new rules leave readers with a fresh, creative take on a magical world.  I found myself utterly consumed with this book, devouring each page until the satisfying ending.

The characters in Shiver are nicely developed to the point of familiarity.  These are people I feel like I know, they are everyday, while being unique.  Grace finds herself drawn to the mysterious animals that prowl through the woods.  Having been exposed to them early in her life, she becomes obsessed, especially with one in particular.  The lack of parents in her life gives her strength and independence, but leaves her vulnerable.  Grace, like many teens, seemed wise for her age. The other main character, Sam, was a bit of a mystery to me.  Readers get to read two perspectives from him and discover tons of depth.  However, there is still so much to learn.

Shiver moves at a fast pace and keeps the reader engaged.  Not only is this a love story, but a story of self-discovery.  Many people, even those without paranormal abilities find themselves torn between two worlds.  I think that is why it is so easy to relate to the characters and the story.  Like her other novels, Stiefvater infuses poetry and music into the plot.  This added to the romance and made the story more enjoyable to read.  The ending of Shiver left me surprised, yet satisfied.  I am anxiously awaiting the release of the second book, Linger, coming in 2010.

For more information about the talented Maggie Stiefvater and her books, visit her at her website.  You need to read this.  Follow this link to order your copy from Barnes and Noble.

SheWolf Challenge: How To Become A Werewolf

My lovely friend Velvet from vvb32reads is hosting a SheWolf Challenge.   Lately I have been reading quite a few werewolf books, so in honor of all things hairy, you can expect some howling posts from me!  To start things off, and to get you in the mood, I present..
.
e-how's directions on How To Become A Werewolf

You need not suffer from lycanthropy, the mental disease of werewolves, to become a wolfman. Below are some shortcuts to becoming a wolf.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions:
Step 1- Sleep on the ground in an open field on a Friday night when the moon is full. Many Europeans who lived several centuries ago approved of this method.

Step 2- Drink water from a wolf's footprint. Two hundred years ago, Balkan natives thought this act would surely help you grow hair and fangs.

Step 3- Satisfy your thirst in certain magical bodies of water, although the whereabouts of these are unknown. If you find that discouraging, drink wherever wolf packs drink.

Step 4- Transform yourself by eating a wolf's brains. Just follow the easy instructions listed in the Wicked Witch's Cookbook (author unknown).

Step 5- Find a French priest and have him put a hex on you. Many incorrigibles were purportedly disciplined in this way in the centuries prior to the 1800s.

or if that doesn't work...
e-how offers another method, however, you will have to investige this one at your own risk.  Good luck!

**OK, JUST IN CASE you have done this and decide your waxing bill will be too much, stay tuned, later this weekend, I will post directions to CURE your lycanthropy!

YA review: Blood Feud by Alyxandra Harvey

The action and romance continue as the Drakes face a new vampire with a 200-year-old grudge. It’s been centuries since Isabeau St. Croix barely survived the French Revolution. Now she’s made her way back to the living and she must face the ultimate test by confronting the evil British lord who left her for dead the day she turned into a vampire. That’s if she can control her affection for Logan Drake, a vampire whose bite is as sweet as the revenge she seeks.
The clans are gathering for Helena’s royal coronation as the next vampire queen, and new alliances are beginning to form now that the old rifts of Lady Natasha’s reign have started to heal. But with a new common enemy, Leander Montmarte—a vicious leader who hopes to force Solange to marry him and usurp the power of the throne for himself—the clans must stand together to preserve the peace he threatens to destroy.

This second adventure in the Drake Chronicles—told from both Logan’s and Isabeau’s perspectives—has all the same butt-kicking action, heart-pounding romances and snarky humor that readers loved in Hearts at Stake, as well as exciting new revelations about the vampire dynasties to keep readers coming back for more.  (summary from Amazon.com)

My thoughts...I LOVE this series.  Initially, I was concerned when I heard that Solange, Lucy, and Nicholas were not the main characters.  This second book in the series demonstrates Harvey's writing ability by taking us further into her magical world.  My favorites from book one still made an appearance, but I quickly fell for the new characters, Logan and Isabeau.  Readers are introduced to Logan in Hearts At Stake, but in Blood Feud, we discover that his charm and chivalrous tendencies stretch beyond his clothes.  This velvet wearing vampire is sure to steal your heart.  Isabeau is my favorite character to date.  She comes from a hard life, but she is honorable, tough, and determined while hiding her vulnerable side.  The chemistry between the two is white hot, I found myself rooting for a happy ending.

Alyxandra Harvey has created an incredible world that is packed with magic and mystery.  Her vampires have different breeds, some of which are at odds with each other.  In Blood Feud, these different groups find it necessary, but difficult to work together.  Readers will learn about the hounds origins, their ceremonial behaviors and magical practices.  The writing is very vivid.  I could imagine everythng that was happening with perdect clarity.  There was plenty of action, adventure and romance to satisfy readers of any age.

If you have not read Hearts At Stake yet, I highly recommend it to fans of Vampire literature.  Blood Feud will be available in June 2010.

For more information, visit the website of Alyxandra Harvey.  Follow this link to preorder your copy from Amazon.com.  My review of book one-Hearts At Stake- can be found here.

YA review: Crazy Beautiful by Lauren Baratz-Logsted

In an explosion of his own making, Lucius blew his arms off. Now he has hooks. He chose hooks because they were cheaper. He chose hooks because he wouldn’t outgrow them so quickly. He chose hooks so that everyone would know he was different, so he would scare even himself.

Then he meets Aurora. The hooks don’t scare her. They don’t keep her away. In fact, they don’t make any difference at all to her.

But to Lucius, they mean everything. They remind him of the beast he is inside. Perhaps Aurora is his Beauty, destined to set his soul free from its suffering.

Or maybe she’s just a girl who needs love just like he does. (summary from author's website)

My thoughts...This was an interesting book that covered some unique subjects matter.  I have never read a story with a character that had this type of limitation before.  The author did a great job of creating Lucius's emotions and reactions dealing with his hooks.  I went through a variety of emotions with this character.  At times I felt sorry for him, felt empowered by him, and at times afraid of him.  There was a lot of mystery in the story about his dark side.  What were his intentions during the accident that caused his disability?  The other main character, Aurora, seemed like an honorable person, she was not one of a crowd of followers.  She is someone I would want to have as a friend.

While I liked the characters in the story, I could not feel their attraction.  It seemed to build up, only to deflate a few chapters later.  I was hoping for more of a romance-a true love story.  While the characters were definitely interested in each other, I felt it came too late.  Overall it was a good story, I am glad I read it and I will be watching for more from this author.

Review: The Mage In Black by Jaye Wells

Sabina Kane doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to family. After all, her own grandmother, leader of the vampire race, wants her dead. So when she arrives in New York to meet her mage relatives, the reunion puts the fun in dysfunctional. Not only is mage culture completely bizarre, but everyone seems to think she’s some kind of ‘Chosen’ who’ll unite the dark races. Sabina doesn’t care who chose her, she’s not into destiny.

But the mages aren’t Sabina’s only problem. In New York’s Black Light District, she has run-ins with fighting demons, hostile werewolves and an opportunistic old flame. Sabina thought she’d take a bite out of the Big Apple – but it looks like it wants to bite back.

My thoughts...In case you are new to this series, this is book two.  You can read my review of book one, Red-Headed Stepchild, by following this link.  Book one was good, but I was waiting for something to set this heroine apart from others in the Urban Fantasy world.  Book two, The Mage In Black did just that.  Readers learn in book one that Sabina Kane is half vampire and half mage, but the mage side is not really explored.  TMIB really explores her magical abilities, introduces a magical community, and gives Sabina platform to stand on.

In The Mage In Black, I saw different sides of Sabina.  She was vulnerable at times, desperate, and sentimental, but she maintained her kick-butt strength.  The character growth really helped me relate and connect to her.  I do not want to give any spoilers, but I will say that we see some old faces in book two, such as Giguhl and Adam.  There are also some new characters that leave a lasting impression, including a potential love interest.  I have to say the demon remains my favorite character.

The Mage In Black was packed with action.  The first few chapters pick up right where book one left off and continues with a steady pace.  Sabina finds herself on the opposite coast.  Life in New York City proves to be challenging as do the people.  Conspiracy flows like blood as Sabina tries to find out who (or what) is after her.  The ending left a bit of a cliffhanger, plenty of unresolved issues for book three, Green-Eyed Demon.

*I recently discovered that the prequel to Red-Headed Stepchild, titled Vampsploitation, can be found in The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance book 2.

Legacy of a False Promise: A Daughter's Reckoning
by Margaret Fuchs Singer
University of Alabama Press
October 28, 2009

Legacy of a False Promise by Margaret Fuchs Singer (The University of Alabama Press) chronicles the years during which the author's parents were exposed as former Communists and her father was subpoenaed before the House Un-American Activities Committee. In this memoir, Singer details her quest as an adult to learn about her parents' former political life and whether they ever spied for the Soviet Union.

Based on eight years of research using family records, FBI files, American University archives, personal interviews, and the declassified Venona cables, Legacy of a False Promise offers unique insights into the McCarthy era. Most "red-diaper babies" who have written on the subject had parents who refused to give in to HUAC's demands. Singer's work instead recounts the shame and series of betrayals that her father's decision to name names brought to her family. Furthermore, it explores the nature and activities of secret Communist underground cells, the motivation of New Deal government workers who spied for the Soviets and the campaign of the liberal anti-Communist movement to publicize its political position while defending a fired ex-Communist professor. Fuchs is believed to be the only American college professor who cooperated with the government and was fired.

This book can be purchased at Amazon.com.  For more information, visit the website of Margaret Fuchs Singer.

R-A-T Wrap-Up

1. Which hour was most daunting for you?
Definitely the last 6.  I think next time I will go to bed really early the night before since I do not drink caffinated drinks (although last night I almost made an exception)
2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?
Hmmm, def9initely a short book, something fast paced and additive...Rachel Vincent's Shifter books, Charlaine Harris's Sookie books, and books by Kimberly Frost.  (if you are a paranormal fan!)
3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?
I thought it was great.  Very organized and well thought out.  I would not change a thing.
4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon?
I liked the way the mini challenges were hosted on the main page (This may not be new, last night was my first time)
5. How many books did you read?
3.25
6. What were the names of the books you read?
The Mage in Black by Jaye Wells, Bite Me by Christopher Moore, Crazy Beautiful by Lauren Baratz-Logsted and part of Shiver by M. Steifvater
7. Which book did you enjoy most?
The Mage In Black
8. Which did you enjoy least?
Crazy Beautiful
9. If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders?
No, they were great.  I got some really enthusiastic cheers, words of encouragement and comments.
10. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?
For sure,  I will read again!  I did not comment on other blogs as much as I wanted to though.  I wouldn't mind hosting challenge next time.  Those were great fun!

R-A-T update

Hmmm, welll, ummm, ya, I think I must'av fallen asleep.

I am going to try to finish Crazy Beautiful, I am close to the end.  If I can stay awake, I am going to start Shiver.  Happy Reading!

R-A-T update and mini challenge

UPDATE...
I am on page 63 of Crazy Beautiful, so far so good.  But UH-OH.  I am getting sleepy.  I decided to take a break and hit the computer for a few.  Maybe I should do a few jumping jacks to get the blood flowing.  How is everyone else holding up?

This one is hosted by The Lost Entwife...
Here is your question: Think of your favorite book – has it been made into a movie? If not (and maybe you’ll need to go to your 2nd favorite book and so on), tell me if you’d like to see it made into a movie and pick one character from the book and give me information on which actor you’d love to see cast in the part. Make your post as fun as possible, tell me why you think the movie would be amazing and why the actor/actress you chose would be perfect in the part!

I loved the Shifter series by Rachel Vincent.  I am including all of the books in the series because they are all so addictive!  So if this was a movie, I would cast Rudy Reyes for Marc.  He may look a bit old, but I think with the right hair he could look younger.  Plus, he has the muscle tone and bone structure of a sleek cat.  MEEOW!

Contest Craze and R-A-T Mid-Challenge Meme

Princess Bookie is holding a MASSIVE contest craze.  She is giving away some great books.  If you haven't already, visit her blog and test your luck.  There is something for everyone!

Mid-Event Survey:

1. What are you reading right now?
Just finished Bite Me by Christopher Moore

2. How many books have you read so far?
Only two-I know that is not many, but the second one had a slow start and the phone kept ringing.

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?
Shiver by Maggie Steifvator

4. Did you have to make any special arrangements to free up your whole day?
Actaully no, I realized at the last minute that my whole day and night would be spent alone.

5. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
YES-the neighbors-the weather is beautiful so everyone is out and chatty.  I mainly politely excused myself from them.  The other thing is the phone, which I muted.

6. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?
How long it actually takes to read a book.  I mean usually I read here and there.  To sit and read a whole book at one time can take a while.

7. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?
On your end, no everything is great.  I am impressed with the mini challenges, the organization, and the great participation.

8. What would you do differently, as a Reader or a Cheerleader, if you were to do this again next year?
On my end, I would plan better.  I would prepare my updates in advance and maybe make a schedule.  Organization is key.

9. Are you getting tired yet?
I am getting a bit cross eyed.  It will be around 11 pm that I will start having trouble.

10. Do you have any tips for other Readers or Cheerleaders, something you think is working well for you that others may not have discovered?
I am still so much of a newbie that I do not have any sage advice, however I will be visiting several other reader's sites for some tips!

YA review: Jekel Loves Hyde by Beth Fantaskey

Jill Jekel has always obeyed her parents’ rules—especially the one about never opening the mysterious, old box in her father’s office. But when her dad is murdered, and her college savings disappear, she’s tempted to peek inside, as the contents might be the key to a lucrative chemistry scholarship.
To improve her odds, Jill enlists the help of gorgeous, brooding Tristen Hyde, who has his own dark secrets locked away. As the team of Jekel and Hyde, they recreate experiments based on the classic novel, hoping not only to win a prize, but to save Tristen’s sanity. Maybe his life. But Jill’s accidental taste of a formula unleashes her darkest nature and compels her to risk everything—even Tristen’s love—just for the thrill of being . . . bad.

Follow this link to read an excerpt.

My thoughts...It is been a long time since I have been exposed to the original story of Jekyll and Hyde by Robert Lewis Stevenson, but I remember the gist of it.  The main characters, Jill and Tristan, are said to be descendants of the original characters.  The pair finds themselves living in the same town, and they soon realize that location may not be their only common bond.

This is one my most anticipated books of year.  I was initially drawn to the cover and the story remake.  I think Beth Fantaskey did a great job of retelling the story using teen characters.  Their voice seemed true to their age without being too childish.  The author did a great job of capturing the emotions they were experiencing, especially Jill's feelings towards her father's death.  The romance between Jill and Tristan ran a bit hot and cold, but I think that was their dynamic and their internal struggles with right and wrong.

The story did not have me on the edge of my seat, but it kept me involved enough to keep turning pages.  There was a decent amount of action infused with some mystery and young love.  I did not find it predictable, but I was not trying to solve the mystery.  Actually, I was a bit surprised by the ending.   Overall, did the story meet my expectations?  Probably not, but I am glad I read it.  I think Beth Fantaskey does a great job writing teens.  I am planning on seeking out her other books and enjoying more of her writing.  This would be a good read for fans of YA books, especially ones who are tired of the Vampires and Witches.

For more information, visit Beth Fantaskey at her website.  This book will hit bookstores in May of 2010.  Visit Borders to preorder your copy.
