TIME-OUT

I am putting myself in blogger time-out.

I have developed a bad habbit of not completing my reviews right away, now I am burried in them.  Here is my list of reviews I need to complete...
The Duff
Adversary
Matched
Hate List

I have decided I am not allowed to blog until I am completely caught up.  Plus I am packing a whole house to prepare for a life-changing move back to the North.  Not to mention Grad classes.

So things may be kind of quiet around here for a while,
but I'll be back.

Cover LOVE?

Here is another brilliant cover from the Elevensies.
Author Tessa Gratton shared the cover for her April 2011 release of Blood Magic.
BLOOD MAGIC

April 26th, 2011 from Random House Children’s Books.

For Nick Pardee and Silla Kennicot, the cemetery is the center of everything.

Nick is a city boy angry at being forced to move back to the nowhere town of Yaleylah, Missouri where he grew up. He can’t help remembering his mom and the blood magic she practiced – memories he’s tried for five years to escape. Silla, though, doesn’t want to forget; her parents’ apparent murder-suicide left her numb and needing answers. When a book of magic spells in her dad’s handwriting appears on her doorstep, she sees her chance to unravel the mystery of their deaths.

Together they plunge into the world of dark magic, but when a hundred-year-old blood witch comes hunting for the bones of Silla’s parents and the spell book, Nick and Silla will have to let go of everything they believe about who they are, the nature of life and death, and the deadly secrets that hide in blood. (summary from author's site)

I love this cover, the colors are striking and the image is beautifully haunting.  I love witchy stories, this one sounds like a hit!  For more information, visit Tessa Gratton at her website.

So are you in Cover LOVE?

Speak Loudly

Censorship: The use of the state and other legal or official means to restrict speech.

One of first reported incidents of Censorship was documented in 259 BC.  Someone, somewhere always has an opinion about what we should or shouldn't read.  Here are some examples...

259–210 B.C.: The Chinese emperor Shih Huang Ti is said to have buried alive 460 Confucian scholars to control the writing of history in his time. In 212 B.C., he burned all the books in his kingdom, retaining only a single copy of each for the Royal Library—and those were destroyed before his death. With all previous historical records destroyed, he thought history could be said to begin with him.
1980s: During its examination of school learning materials, the London County Council in England banned the use of Beatrix Potter’s children’s classics The Tale of Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny from all London schools. The reason: the stories portrayed only “middle-class rabbits.”

1983: Members of the Alabama State Textbook Committee called for the rejection of The Diary of Anne Frank because it was “a real downer.” It was also challenged for
offensive references to sexuality.

1987: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou was removed from the required reading list for Wake County, North Carolina, high school students because of a scene in which the author, at the age of seven and a half, is raped.

1997: In Ireland, a government censorship board banned at least 24 books and 90 periodicals.

1998: In Kenya the government banned 30 books and publications for “sedition and immorality,” including The Quotations of Chairman Mao and Salman Rushdie’s The
Satanic Verses.

2001: The U.S.A. PATRIOT Act, passed by the American Congress in response to terrorist attacks on New York and Washington on September 11, gave the FBI power to collect information about the library borrowings of any U.S. citizen. The act also empowered the federal agency to gain access to library patrons’ log-ons to Internet
Web sites—and protected the FBI from disclosing the identities of individuals being investigated.

(information sited from FREEDOM TO READ)

I think this is wrong.  Censorship is happening in our schools, churches, libraries, and within our community.  The book SPEAK by Laure Halse Anderson is being attacked saying the rape scenes are  pornographic.  The author of the article in trying to get SPEAK and several other titles removed from the school library's reading lists.  Books that address these tough issues should not be taken lightly, but they should be read.  Books like these give a voice to those who can't find theirs.  Books like these deserve a place on the shelf.

*I have not read this book, but I value my freedom to make my own choice.
So I am joining with the book community to SPEAK LOUDLY and say NO TO CENSORSHIP.

Interview and Giveaway: Jennifer Estep

Please help me welcome paranormal author Jennifer Estep to the blog today. Jennifer's latest book, Venom hit shelves September 28th.

1. For any new readers, please tell us about your Elemental Assassin Series.
JE: Sure. The Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series focuses on Gin Blanco, an assassin code named the Spider who can control the elements of Ice and Stone. When she’s not busy killing people and righting wrongs, Gin runs a barbecue restaurant called the Pork Pit in the fictional southern metropolis of Ashland. The city is also home to giants, dwarves, vampires, and elementals – Air, Fire, Ice, and Stone.

The first book in the series, Spider’s Bite, was released in February 2010. Web of Lies, the second book in the series, came out in June 2010. Venom, the third book, will hit shelves on Sept. 28.

Tangled Threads, the fourth book in the series, will be published in May 2011, while the fifth book (untitled at this point) will be released in October 2011.

The books are basically dark, fun, sexy, action-packed urban fantasies.

2. A strong heroine makes a story worth reading. How would you describe Gin?
JE: I would describe Gin as smart, sassy, and sarcastic. She also has a real killer instinct, since she’s an assassin. LOL. Sorry, I couldn’t resist the bad joke there.

All kidding aside, I would describe Gin as a tough heroine who does what she needs to in order to survive the corrupt, violent world that she lives in. In Gin’s case, her family was murdered when she was a kid, which led to her living on the streets and being taken in by an assassin. As a result, Gin tends to kill first and ask questions later, especially when it comes to protecting the people that she cares about.

3. You have created an exciting, yet complex world. How do you handle your world building? Are you a post-it kind of girl?
JE: I don’t really plot that much or use post-it notes or anything. I do a general outline of the story, sit down, and start writing. When I start a new book, I have a rough idea of the various characters/creatures and how the magic works, and I just go from there.

With every draft that I do, I go back through, see what’s working and what’s not, and refine the characters/magic as needed. I do this several times until the book and the magic are as interesting and entertaining as I can make them;

4. By day you are "an award winning feature page designer". Sounds like a busy job. When do you find time to write? And I have to know if you ever worked in a BBQ joint.
JE: I write after work and on the weekends. I pretty much devote most of my Sundays to doing book stuff, whether it’s writing, blogging, updating my website, or the thousand other things that authors do.

I haven’t worked at a barbecue joint, but I live in the South, which is full of great barbecue joints. In fact, there’s a terrific barbecue restaurant not too far away from my house – and they make the best baked beans around.

5. You have another series called the Bigtime books that doesn't seem to get as much attention as Gin and the gang. Please tell us about this Paranormal Romance series.
JE: Like you said, the Bigtime books are paranormal romances. Basically, they are comic book spoofs that fea¬ture sexy superheroes, evil ubervillains, and smart, sassy gals looking for love. Titles in the series are Karma Girl, Hot Mama, and Jinx.

The books are just goofy, campy fun, kind of like the old Batman show with Adam West or Wonder Woman with Lynda Carter.

6. Given the choice, which element would you like to control: air, fire, ice or snow?
JE: Actually, some folks think that I can control an element already – ice, because my hands are always so cold. LOL. Seriously, they are like ice cubes most days, and some of my friends have jokingly said that I have “ghoul touch” because they are so cold. So if I could control one element, I’d have to go with ice because of all that.

7. Lastly, you write about paranormal beings and powers. How far do your beliefs go? Do you believe in all those things that go bump in the night?
JE: I like to think that magic is possible – that there is good magic and that there are good folks out there who help other people.

As for the other things that go bump in the night, well, I hope the nasty ones aren’t real! There’s enough scary stuff in the world already without adding killer vampires or bloodthirsty werewolves to the mix. LOL.

Ok,well I agree with the killer vampires, but I wouldn't mind a werewolf or two, especially if he looked like Joe Manganiello- yum.  Thanks for the interview Jennifer.  Congrats on your new release!

Interview: A. S. King

I am very excited to host the very talented AS King today.  She is the author of The Dust Of 100 Dogs and the upcoming Please Ignore Vera Dietz.

I am excited to hear you have an upcoming Young Adult release. Please tell us about Please Ignore Vera Dietz.

ASK: Thank you so much for having me, Elie! I’m really excited about my next book, Please Ignore Vera Dietz, which comes out October 12, 2010.

The book is about Vera Dietz, a high school senior who has recently lost her best friend Charlie. The thing is, she knows a lot more about what led to his death than anyone, but she’s not telling. Four months before Charlie died, he completely screwed her over and started hanging out with the wrong crowd. But the secrecy started years before that—when they were just eleven years old. Threaded between the mystery of Charlie’s death is the story of Vera’s present day life—a mix of full-time job, a father who is too-Zen about everything, and a long-gone mother who has a colorful past. Oh. And there’s a talking pagoda.

2. In The Dust of 100 Dogs, Emer was an incredibly strong heroine. How does Vera compare? Does she have the same ferocity?
ASK: I think Vera is a strong heroine. She’s faced with a lot of things and confronts her responsibilities. That said, Emer was a character borne from a huge pile of 17th century adversity that Vera would never see in her lifetime. Really, it’s hard to compare any heroine to Emer. She’s in a world all her own, and ferocity is easy to attain when you’re living the life of a pirate. Please Ignore Vera Dietz takes place in modern day. Where Emer fought hard because she knew true love was out there somewhere, Vera already knows true love is dead. But where Emer lived lies when it was called for, Vera finds it hard to ignore the truth.

3. You lived in Ireland for nearly a decade. How did this experience influence or spur your writing?
ASK: Well, technically, it was moving to Ireland that started me writing novels. When I first got there, I couldn’t work unless I acquired papers that would have been very difficult to get. Add to that the fact that I really didn’t like what I was qualified to do (I was a master printer in darkrooms, and digital photography was being birthed right about then, too.) So, I started writing. When we made the decision to move to a more rural area, we thought for a long time about what direction we wanted to take. I knew I wanted to continue writing, so we chose to try self-sufficiency so I could continue to write full-time.

As for the actual books, The Dust of 100 Dogs had Irish history in it, but that is the only book that reflects my time in Ireland. The rest of my books are still really influenced by general life-stuff and my upbringing in rural Pennsylvania.

4. I heard you were a fan, so in the words of Kurt Vonnegut "I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, 'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.'" When you started writing, did you expect this success and how do you feel about it now?
ASK: I have to admit: I have no idea that I am successful. I measure it by the ruler of the work, not the physical books. I don’t do this to get published books on shelves. I do this because I love making interesting books to read. While yes, it feels great to see a book on a shelf or to receive a royalty statement or a check in the mail, it’s still a far larger feeling of joy to make a story work. I am happiest when I am writing. I am happiest when I am challenged by my writing.

To answer your question more specifically, though, I’d have to say no. No, I did not expect to ever get published. By the time I’d written my seventh novel and saw no traditional publishing success from it, I’d been writing for about twelve years. It certainly does make me feel good that I have an outlet for my work now, and readers enjoy the stories I write. But I haven’t really caught up with that news yet or something.

5. You have held a variety of jobs in the past including rare poultry breeder, photographer, contractor, and juggler. If not writing, what career choice would you be currently enjoying?
ASK: I would probably be doing something I’ve never done before. Though I liked those past jobs, I got bored with them. (With exception of literacy teacher in Kilkenny City. I’d do that again in the morning.) So, in no specific order, if I had another 500 years on Earth, I’d be a mathematician, a special ed teacher, an architect, a librarian, a psychologist, a spy, an astronaut or a independent bookseller. I’d most likely own my own business, whatever I’d do. (Yes—a self-employed astronaut. I’d find a way to do that.)

6. Are you currently working on any new projects you can share with us?
ASK: I’m currently working hard to perfect my next novel, Everybody Sees the Ants which is slated to come out in fall 2011 from Little, Brown. The basic gist goes like this: While Lucky Linderman struggles to cope with a relentless bully, he mysteriously communicates with his long-lost POW grandfather still missing in action in Vietnam.

Once I finish work on this book and it goes to production, I will finish the book I started this spring, which is top secret, but involves airplanes. And if I wasn’t backed-up enough, an experience I had last week while volunteering for my community swimming pool has spurred the novel that will come after that. Now, all I need is some time, or clones or maybe some telepathic typing monkeys.

7. What 5 items would you bury in a time capsule for future generations?
ASK: I like toasters. So I’d put one of those in there. Probably a red one.

A CD of Axis Bold as Love by Jimi Hendrix.

A Big Mac and fries meal (I bet the fries would stay intact, too.)

A copy of Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

A note that reads: Hi. Life was cool in the 20th/21st century. Sorry about the mess.

8. Lastly, what do you do in your spare time? Any guilty pleasures?
ASK: In the summer, I swim. Outside of that, with two small kids and a business to run, I don’t really have any spare time. If I did have free time I think I’d probably spend it writing. Which proves that you can make a career out of your guilty pleasure.

Thank you A.S. I am sure Please Ignore Vera Dietz is going to be a huge hit just likeThe Dust Of 100 Dogs.

For more information about A.S. King and her books, visit her website.  Please Ignore Vera Dietz is available for preorder by following this link.

Book Chat and Giveaway

Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover Title.

If you are like me, I am quick to judge a book by its cover.  I rarely read book summaries for fear of spoilers.  So unless I have read a great review or am familiar with the author, the cover is usually the deciding factor.

But what about the title?

I have recently come across several books that I had no intention of reading because I just didn't like the title.  I know this sounds ludicrous, but I am a word person and well, some words just bother me.  The two most recent ones were...

I didn't even know what Hate List was about, all I knew was it sounded so negative, I didn't want to read it.  Then came The Duff, well the title speaks for itself.

Well, copies of these books made their way into my hands and I read them anyways.  I am glad I did.  Both of these books were great.  They dealt with things that make people uncomfortable and unhappy, but they were great stories and I am glad I read them.

So just in case you are like me and judge a book by its title, I want you to read one anyways.  I am giving away an ARC of The Duff to a lucky reader.

To enter, tell me (in the comments section) if you are guilty of judging a book by its title.  Please include your contact email addy in your comment.  One entry per person, US only please due to shipping charges.  Please enter by 9/17.  Good luck.

*My review of these two books are coming soon!

I am almost afraid for this book to come out.  What if the ending is horrible??  What is someone I love dies??  What if the ending is unsatifying?? I know Rachel Vincent rocks and the ending will be great, but is anyone else out there nervous?  I love this series and the ending will be bittersweet.  I guess all great things must come to an end.  Enjoy the trailer.

YA review: Firelight

A HIDDEN TRUTH

MORTAL ENEMIES

DOOMED LOVE

Marked as special at an early age, Jacinda knows her every move is watched. But she longs for freedom to make her own choices. When she breaks the most sacred tenet of her kind, she nearly pays with her life, only to be spared by a beautiful stranger sent to hunt those like her. For Jacinda is a draki--a descendant of dragons whose ability to shift into human form is her best defense.

Forced to flee into the mortal world, Jacinda struggles to adapt. The one bright light is Will. Gorgeous, elusive Will who stirs her inner draki to life. Although she is irresistibly drawn to him, Jacinda knows Will's dark secret: He and his family are hunters. She should avoid him at all costs. But her inner draki is slowly slipping away - if it dies she will be left a human forever. She'll do anything to prevent that. Even if it means getting closer to her most dangerous enemy.

Mythical powers and irresistible passion ignite in this story of a girl who defies all expectations and whose love crosses an ancient divide ... (summary from author's website)
My thoughts...I loved this story.  Sophie Jordan offers readers a fresh voice in young adult paranormal literature.  This magical tale of the Draki will have you sitting on the edge of your seat hoping there is a happy ending for everyone.

Jacinda, the heroine of the story, is a female descendant of dragons.  She is able to breathe fire, which is a trait that is rarely found in the Draki.  Because of this her pride wants to control her and decide her future, her Mom has other ideas.  Jacinda is an incredible heroine.  Readers will find themselves drawn to her strength, devotion, and her ability to handle tough situations.  Firelight also offers readers some other memorable characters such as Will, the hunter, Azure, the water Draki, and Will's cousins.  Several of them are guaranteed to leave a bad taste in your mouth.

Firelight starts off fast-paced and doesn't let up until the end.  Jordan does of brilliant job of writing action scenes that leave the reader breathless.  This story is one of a forbidden love, one with an impossible ending.  Will is a hunter.  He is trained to kill Jacinda's kind.  Her best defense is shifting to human form, but it presents a whole new set of problems.  She has to make some hard decisions that will not only effect her, but her family.

I have to say that I was skeptical at first about the Draki.  I imagined them as shifting into huge firebreathing beasts with skin like a lizard.  Jordan's creatures were beautiful and I was enchanted by their grace and magic.  I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy paranormal young adult.  You will not be disappointed.

Interview: Sophie Jordan

Today, September 7, 2010, is the official release day of Firelight by Author Sophie Jordan.  She was kind enough to drop by and answer a few questions.

1. Please tell us about your Young Adult debut Firelight.
SJ: Well, the summary does that best:

Marked as special at an early age, Jacinda knows her every move is watched. But she longs for freedom to make her own choices. When she breaks the most sacred tenet of her kind, she nearly pays with her life, only to be spared by a beautiful stranger sent to hunt those like her. For Jacinda is a draki--a descendant of dragons whose ability to shift into human form is her best defense.

Forced to flee into the mortal world, Jacinda struggles to adapt. The one bright light is Will. Gorgeous, elusive Will who stirs her inner draki to life. Although she is irrestibly drawn to him, Jacinda knows Will's dark secret: He and his family are hunters. She should avoid him at all costs. But her inner draki is slowly slipping away - if it dies she will be left a human forever. She'll do anything to prevent that. Even if it means getting closer to her most dangerous enemy.

2. Breathing fire is an awesome ability. Jacinda must be pretty tough. How would you describe her?
SJ: Well, she is tough. As the most coveted/prized member of her pride, she’s an incredibly tough character. She’s had to be. And that has nothing to do necessarily with being a fire-breather but as a result of it. Although I’m not denying that breathing fire is a seriously kick-butt super power.

She’s constantly fighting pressure from others and battling for her independence more than just an average teenager would. While the battle to discover/claim oneself is a pretty normal struggle for a teen, Jacinda’s struggle is heightened because she’s the last fire-breather of her pride – the last in generations. Unless she resists, she’ll be used, manipulated … even forced to mate all because of her draki talent.

3. You are a New York Times Bestselling Author. Having penned historical romances and paranormal romances for adults, was it hard to make the leap to writing for young adults?
SJ: Romance is the core thread in all my writing … and my voice pretty much remains the same (I think!). So in a weird way, the move to YA wasn’t such a leap. Historical Romance, Para Romance, YA … none of it feels that different to me. There’s always some steamy boy/girl interaction in anything I write, so I find it all enjoyable.

4. What are you working on now? More books in the Firelight series?
SJ:Yes, right now I’m finishing up the second book in the Firelight series … title and cover to be revealed shortly. Stay tuned!

5. If you had a rare ability like Jacinda, what would it be?
SJ: I don’t know if I’ve created a draki ability/talent to suit me yet. Maybe I’ll have to work on one. Although I love the water. It would be lovely to be a water draki like the draki character Az in Firelight who has the ability to remain underwater for however long she wants – essentially like a fish or mermaid.

6. I read you are a huge horror flick fan. What is you all time favorite horror movie(s).
SJ: Tough choice! I’m a big Alfred Hitchcock fan. LOVE Rear Window. But I also love zombie flicks. 28 Days Later is probably my favorite horror film. As much as I love horror, I don’t go for slasher movies.

7. Lastly, what 5 things would you bury in a time capsule for future generations?
SJ: 1. Hmm, a copy of Firelight, of course.

2. Probably one of my daughter’s drawings – she drew an excellent picture of a fire-breathing dragon for me. It’s beautiful and raw and innocent.

3. Night by Elie Wiesel. Everyone should read this book.

4. A box of Ding Dongs (b/c they remind me of my childhood)

5. And I’ll cheat a little here because it’s really two: a copy of both the book and movie of To Kill A Mockingbird.

Sophie, congratulations on your new release, it is a wonderfully original story.

The Final Edition
by, Lawrence Meyer
Historical Fiction
April 23, 2010

The Final Edition is the compelling story of an American newspaper and the family that owns it, from the Civil War to the end of the 20th century. Beginning in the last days of the Civil War, it tells the story of the rise and heyday of newspapers. For the next 60 years they were the source-the only source-of information about politics and sports, scandal and tragedy. No informed American could afford to be without one. Neither radio nor television dislodged the dominance of newspapers in informing America. Newspaper publishers were political aristocrats, wielding enormous power; newspaper families were among the social elite in cities across America. The Final Edition, Lawrence Meyer's third novel, is the story of a great newspaper, the Washington Sentinel, "a watchman in the night," fearlessly protecting the public interest above all. It is also a vibrant account of family intrigue over control of Washington's most powerful newspaper. Spanning five generations, Presidents Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower and John Kennedy are among the key figures whose lives are woven into the fabric of this compelling and informative novel. The Final Edition offers readers a richly detailed glimpse behind the scenes of a fictional but all too real American newspaper, bringing exciting moments in American history to life. It is a story as current and relevant as today's headlines, as a great newspaper struggles to survive. Most engrossingly, it is the epic story of one powerful family's rise and fall, a gripping portrait of an elite family caught in personal and national turmoil and social change. Lawrence Meyer, a veteran journalist as well as novelist, was an award-winning reporter at two newspaper dynasties, the Louisville Times and The Washington Post. He brings that experience and a fine knowledge of American history to bear in a powerful, entertaining novel that will captivate readers of all ages. (summary from Amazon)

Book Chat~ Quarter in the Jar

Around my house, if someone says something unkind or is using foul language, they have to put a quarter in the jar.  Our choice of words, whether in a private setting or public, says a lot about us.

This brings me to use of excessive language in Young Adult novels and in the blogging community.

Most teens swear, as do most adults.  But how much is too much?  Do you find it distracting when every other word in a novel is the F-bomb?

Also, our blogs are extensions of our personalities.  My blog has become sort of a business.  Many of us work with professional authors, publishers, and other types of companies.   Do you consider this when you write your posts?  Do you find excessive language in book blogs offensive?

What are your ideas?

YA review: Sleepless

Sleepless (Delacorte, July 13, 2010)

Eron De Marchelle isn’t supposed to feel a connection. He is a Sandman, a supernatural being whose purpose is to seduce human charges to sleep. While he can communicate with his charges in their dreams, he isn’t encouraged to–after all, getting too involved in one human’s life would prevent him helping his other charges get their needed rest.

But he can’t deny that he feels something for Julia. Julia, with her fiery red hair and her sad dreams. Just weeks ago, her boyfriend died in a car accident, and Eron can tell that she feels more alone than ever. Eron was human once too, many years ago, and he remembers how it felt to lose the one he loved. Eron has always felt protective of Julia . . . but now, when she seems to need him more than ever, he can’t seem to reach her . . .

Sandmen are forbidden from communicating with humans outside their dreams. But will Eron be willing to risk everything for a chance to be with the person he loves? (summary from author's website)

My thoughts...Sleepless has a very original plot that gives readers a fresh reading experience.   The story is about a Sandman and his charge.  Eron, who was a human boy about 100 years ago, became my favorite character almost instantly.  His old world manners and charm made his character very enjoyable.  He is in charge of putting Julia, among others, to sleep every night.  Julia's character felt cold to me at times, but she dealt with her misfortunes in her own way and still maintained her dignity.  I found some of the characters transparent at times, their true motives seemed to be just beneath the surface.

Sleepless was a fast paced book.  It is told from several point of view which provides a good perspective of the characters.  Parts of the story were predictable, but it allowed me to focus on some of the other details.  The ending of the book left me feeling a bit unsatisfied, it seemed a bit abrupt and forced.  However, it left room for another story about the characters.  Cyn Balog has a wonderful style of writing that lends itself to great storytelling.  I would recommend this book to fans of YA literature, especially if you are looking for something new and exciting.
